A Mother’s Tragic Choice

I was on The Early Show speaking with Erica Hill and Kevin Ryan, the president of Covenant House, a child-care agency, about Kristin LaBrie. LaBrie is a Massachusetts mother who has been charged with attempted murder for withholding cancer medications from her autistic son, who was 9 years old when he died of leukemia in 2009. LaBrie was also charged with reckless child endangerment, and assault and battery.

A jury found that LaBrie withheld treatment from her son for at least 5 months despite the fact that he would have had an 85-90 percent chance of a cure. We discussed what could push a mother to withhold treatment, and act in this manner.
